The Riviera Maya has many music festivals and celebrations throughout the year. This page is to show you month by month what highlights are happening, so you can plan ahead for any festivals, races, and celebrations you wish to be a part of.
HALLOWEEN, October 31 - Pack your costume in your suit case, and celebrate Halloween in Playa del Carmen. This city loves Halloween and invites you to join in the festivity. Decorate yourself or have your makeup professionally painted on to walk the streets of Fifth Avenue or go clubbing in costume.
THANKSGIVING, November 23 - Bring your family to the beach, and you'll be thankful you did. Many restaurants cater to the American tradition with turkey and all the fixings. You can also make it more intimate and hire a private chef to stuff your turkey. Either way, it's a great time of year to be in the Caribbean where the subtropical climate lands around 77 degrees daily.
JAZZ FESTIVAL, November 30 to December 2 - This year marks the 16th anniversary of the Riviera Maya's JAZZ festival. Taking place year after year at Mamita's beach club in Playa del Carmen, the beachfront Jazz festival brings locals and tourists from all over the world together in the sand to listen to artists like Earth Wind & Fire, George Benson, Tower of Power, & Sergio Mendez. CANCUN MARATHON, 5K, 21K & 42K, early December (exact date TBD) - Running in the Riviera Maya is quite popular due to the perfect temperature and flat paths. There are tons of races throughout the year, and runners from all over the world attend. All are welcome to participate as long as you're 18 and older.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS, December 2 to December 30 - Spending the holidays with family and friends on the beach is a jolly idea. The streets are lit up with decor and provide a feeling of pure happiness. NEW YEARS EVE, December 31 - If you're looking for a relaxing, chic, or exciting New Years Eve destination, you've come to the right place. The Beach Planner can provide laid back vibes with live music on the beach, rooftop clubs to enjoy the view of it all, or jungle parties where DJ’s are playing beats that force you to move your body with the music, and smile endlessly. Recovery and celebration of New Year's Day will take place on the beach or a rooftop pool. Please keep in mind that the week of NYE is the busiest of the year. The sooner you book the better. ARENA MUSIC FESTIVAL, February 1 - 5 - Arena music festival is the celebration of the LGBTQ community. Gay or straight, all are welcome to celebrate, dance, and honor the freedom this city provides to everyone equally. Arena music festival is taken place in both Playa and Tulum throughout the week. CARNIVAL, late February (dates TBD) - Carnival in Playa del Carmen (not as wild as Brazil's Carnival, but just as fun) is growing in popularity and each year seems to grow larger. The parade follows Playa's famous 5th Avenue on multiple nights, which includes floats, dancers, vibrant costumes, and lots of fun! The parade ends at a large square in the middle of Playa (near Constituyentes Avenue) where tourists and locals dance, eat, and party together into the night.
SPRING BREAK - Spring break means vacation mode, and vacation mode means Mexico! Use your time off wisely, and spend your spring break in the sand.
SPRING EQUINOX, MARCH 20 - Around March 20th is the spring equinox. This is the day to go to Chichen Itza ruins to see the shadow line up with the main pyramid and form the snake shadow. This yearly tradition brings many tourists from around the world, as well as locals who look forward to this event each year.
EASTER, APRIL 21 - Paint your eggs in the sand, and spend Easter in the Mexican Caribbean. Spending time with family and loved ones on holidays at the beach is the best gift you could give. Many restaurants join in the celebration and provide Easter Sunday spreads. Additionally, there are many churches in Playa del Carmen who have an open door policy for visiting tourists. This is a very busy time of year. The earlier you book the more options you'll have.
RIVIERA MAYA FILM FESTIVAL, MID APRIL (exact dates TBD) - This week long showing of multiple films, including international award winning films, can be seen around the city of Playa del Carmen and other surrounding cities. This is a great way to experience the true culture of Mexico, and tickets cost nada.
CINCO DE MAYO, MAY 5 - Where in the world would you rather be on Cinco De Mayo? It's obvious Mexico celebrates this holiday like no other. This celebration is observed to commemorate Mexico's victory over the French Empire at the battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Celebrate this world known holiday where it all started.
ART WITH ME, MAY 10 - 13 - The Art With Me experience will unfold at Tulum’s most well-known and beloved venues, hotels and restaurants in both Tulum Pueblo and along the beach. Join painters, visual artists, sculptors and local artists to celebrate artistic innovation and bring awareness to social and environmental issues. MOTHERS DAY, MAY 13 - Life doesn't come with a manual, it comes with a mother. Treat the mom in your life to a beach escape she'll never forget.
